Description
My husband Michael Walsh took this photo and I edited it. Then he created a painterly version of this image with brush strokes of different colors. If you zoom into the painterly photo you can see both blue and purple brush strokes. Both painterly and non-painterly versions of this photo are available. Both are available in color or black and white.
The historic Venice-Nokomis Bank building in Nokomis, Florida was built in 1923. It was the first bank and post office in Sarasota County. It is the oldest building on US 41 between Venice and Tampa. It sits on the corner of Pocono and US 41 at 801 Tamiami Trail South, Nokomis, Florida 34275. It was built in the Mizner Style of architecture with waterfront views of Dona Bay. The Venice-Nokomis Bank was organized in 1925 in Nokomis and in 1927 moved to a new building on Venice Avenue in nearby downtown Venice just south of here. A medalliion in the bank at the new location on Venice Ave. was installed in 1960. Before the building was demolished in 1975 the medallion was removed and then placed in front of the historic Triangle Inn in 1996 in Venice. Now the historic Venice-Nokomis Bank in Nokomis houses a cafe called Cafe Evergreen. Across the street is the brightly-colored tiki bar of Nokomos Sunset Hut with sunset views over Dona Bay.
Nokomis sits between Dona Bay and Roberts Bay, and in its early days was part of a larger community known as Horse and Chaise. The name came from clumps of trees that reminded sailors of a horse and chaise (two-wheeled horse-drawn wagon). In 1917 world-renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Fred Albee and his wife visited the Nokomis area and purchased land to develop it. They purchased 112 acres of land north and south of Nokomis from the Sarasota-Venice Company and advertised the entire area as the “Pearl City” because of the proposed smooth white stucco on the Mediterranean-style buildings. Albee hired city planner John Nolen to design plans for Bay Point and Venice. Albee established the Venice-Nokomis Bank, built the Villa Nokomis along the Sarasota-Venice road and donated land for the Venice-Nokomis Methodist Church as well as the Nokomis School. Colonia Lane was named for Albee's hometown in New Jersey.
Fred H. Albee was an orthopedic surgeon who invented bone grafting and other advances in surgical treatment. He was also one of the fathers of rehabilitative medicine, a pioneer in physical, psychologicl and occupational rehabilitation. Because of his discoveries many injured, crippled and disfigured people were able to overcome trauma that had previously been untreatable. Dr. Albee's methods were developed right before World War I. Prior to that the primary treatment for a soldier's fractured limb had been amputation to prevent the spread of infection.
Albee donated land for an airport with sod runways in Venice to transport Albee's patients to Albee's private orthopedic hospital.
