Description
Have you ever wondered what Florida looked like centuries ago? When it was just nature? That's what you feel like you're seeing when you visit Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, Florida. It's like walking back in time. Picture a large expanse of prairies and fields surrounded by gigantic live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. You drive under a canopy of these trees as you go through the park. Alligators and water birds walk along the shores of a large lake and the Myakka River. It's a place that feels like it's far away from civilization. It's a wonderful place to get away from it all and just enjoy nature and wildlife.
This is a large live oak tree in Myakka River State Park. I was inspired by Clyde Butcher, a well known photographer here in Florida who photographs nature and the Everglades. He took a photo of this same tree in black and white. And I wanted to find it. Because it's tucked away on a trail and the park is 37,000 acres, it took me some time to find it. I walked through a woods, and in the distance I saw a clearing, and was so happy to discover the tree with this incredible view! I like how it frames the view out to the prairie with palm trees and yellow wildflowers.
I walked through some brush and set up my tripod in the tall grass to get the perfect angle where the tree framed the palm trees in the distance. I took 12 photos at different angles and exposures and merged them together to create an HDR panorama to capture the entire scene and all the details in the bright and dark areas. It created a very high resolution file that can be printed large.
Myakka River State Park is one of the largest and oldest parks here in the Gulf Coast of Florida with 37,000 acres at the Myakka River near Sarasota, Bradenton, and Myakka City. The park is known for its wildlife and alligators and its boardwalk into the river which is good for birding.
