Description
This image shows the 2nd bookstore in Paris named Shakespeare and Company. It is located on the Left Bank in the 5th arrondissement near the Seine River, Notre Dame, and Il de la Cite. Opened in 1951 it still houses aspiring writers and artists in exchange for helping out at the bookstore. Entering this store was like walking through time, the beds are still tucked inbetween the bookshelves and tables are topped with old typewriters. An old room full of bookshelves upstairs has a window that opens to the view of the Seine and Notre Dame. A sign inside the store reads, "Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise." Outside the front of this store you can see an intricately sculpted fountain which is one of many throughout the city of Paris. This store was named after the first store which opened in 1919 in the 6th arrondissement by Sylvia Beach. In the 1920's this first store was a gathering place for aspiring writers such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
A black and white version of this photo is also available.
My husband and I put everything in storage to travel Europe with no return date or home to come back to. It was an amazing adventure in Portugal, Spain, and France. When we came home my husband wrote a lighthearted book about it called, "Vagabonds in France" by Michael A. Barry. It is available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon.
