Description
Entrance at McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach, Florida. Vines grow on the curved black iron arbor that covers the path to the gardens. Lush tropical growth abounds at McKee Botanical Gardens. The history of McKee started with 80 acres as McKee Jungle Gardens in the 1930's. It had monkeys, an alligator, an aviary, and 300 royal palms planted in rows as "Cathedral of Palms". It was designed by the same man who designed Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami and Bok Tower in Lake Wales. It was a tourist destination until the 1970's when it could no longer compete with other amusement parks. 62 acres were turned into a golf course and condos. The remaining 18 acres are what McKee Botanical Gardens are today. This photo is available in color (See "Entrance to Paradise").
