Description
In rural Manatee County, Florida there is a 200 acre farm which breeds and trains Royal Lipizzan Stallions, the rarest, most aristocratic breed of horses in the world. They were the pride of the Hapsburg Royal family of Austria. Only a few hundred have ever existed at any one time. They were saved from the Russian advance in World War II by General George Patton. Assisting Patton in the mission was Colonel Herrmann and his father, whose family maintains this 200 acre ranch to train and breed these horses. They perform spectacular leaps and plunges originally meant for defensive war practices. In this photo, a retired Lipizzan stallion is grazing in pasture. Saw palmettos and trees with spanish moss are in the background (a typical old Florida rural landscape). This photo is available in color (See "A Retired Lipizzan's Life").
