Description
A couple years ago my husband and I put everything in storage to travel Europe. It was a crazy adventure! We left with no return date or home to come back to. My husband loves to travel, and I love photography. We sailed across the Atlantic and couldn't wait to explore France.
One of the first places we explored was the French Riviera. We love history and couldn't wait to explore the historic pedestrian alleys! So much charm!
We stayed at a bed and breakfast in the heart of the city, and our host treated us to warm French hospitality with a breakfast on bone china each morning on her rooftop terrace. The view of the city was incredible with Castle Hill in the distance.
We rode the local tram through the city and walked near the Mediterranean Sea to Castle Hill. We climbed up the steep steps to a panorama view of the city far below. We could see the narrow pedestrian alleys in Old Town right below us, twisting around old architecture with terra cotta roofs and historic church steeples at every turn. And to the left we saw the main walkway along the coastline, the famous Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English). The bright aqua waters of the Mediterranean Sea were so beautiful!
We wanted to walk the alleys of Old Town, but didn't know to get through the maze of streets, so we randomly explored a different path down Castle Hill. We got lost, but discovered a beautiful waterfall and historic cemetery, and ate a picnic lunch halfway down. We found a path down the side of the hill that brought us right into the heart of Old Town with this incredible view of a pedestrian alley! The colorful buildings with many shutters, balconies, and flower pots were full of character.
Nice is a beautiful city in the southeastern part of France, in the Cote d'Azur region, sitting on the Mediterranean Sea. It is near Monaco, Eze, and St. Paul de Vence. Nice is nicknamed, "Nice la Belle", which means "Nice the Beautiful". In the second half of the 18th century the beauty and mild Mediterranean climate attracted the upper class English who spent winters here. The clear air and soft light of the region attracted artists like Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and others. Nice continues to draw many tourists. Some popular squares and pedestrian areas in the city are Place Messena, Place Garibaldi, Place Rossetti, Cours Saleya, and Place du Palais.
You can read about our adventure in Europe in my husband's book, "Vagabonds in France", by Michael A. Barry. Come with us as we lose our home, put everything in storage, and navigate through Europe for a few months with no return date or home to come back to. Sail across the Atlantic, dodge pickpockets, climb mountains, descend into the Paris Metro, endure nasty weather and illness, witness the flood of the century, and meet some wonderful and not-so-wonderful people. Chuckle with us as we live among the French and try to learn their ways and language. Then make it back home to an empty house we'd never seen before. I illustrated the book with 75 illustrations. The book is available in both paperback and Kindle on Amazon.
