Artist's Description
An old man playing music on his accordian sits on the Pont Saint-Michel bridge over the flooded Seine River in Paris. A bird sits nearby listening, while tourists in the background peer over the railing to see the rising flood waters and Notre Dame in the distance. In late May and early June 2016 Paris received a lot of rain, which flooded the Seine River to 15-17 meters above its normal level. It was quite a sight to see! Thankfully the water did not go over the banks; however, the lower level walkways and buildings at the water level were flooded for at least a week. Water taxi stands were submerged. Water levels were too high for boats to travel underneath the ornate bridges so boat traffic ceased for nearly a week until the waters receded. In 1910 the Seine flooded at 28 meters above normal level which brought the waters into the streets of the city. The 2016 flood closed metro lines along the Seine.
