Description
The sculptures on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris have a strong sense of power, victory, and strength; you can't help but feel patriotic and have pride when looking at them, even if you're not French. I used my long lens to get some close-up views of the magnificent artistry of these sculptures. This strong warrior made an impression on me that I will not forget. He looks at the future with confidence, with the victory of war behind him. I can't help but be inspired by his strength, to be strong like him when facing adversity. I'm sure a lot of us can relate. Life isn't easy at times, and we need strength to get through.
The Arc de Triomphe in Paris sits on the western end of the Champs-Elysees inside the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, a circle road that is crazy to drive because 12 roads connect to it.. The Arc is so huge it is impressive even viewing from far away on the other end of the Champs-Elysees. It is one of the most famous French monuments, designed by Jean Chalgrin who died before the arc was finished around 1836, and honors the fallen French soldiers from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Names of the French victories and generals are inscribed on the inner and outer surfaces of the monument. Underneath the Arc lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. Triumphant and patriotic friezes and sculptures line the Arc, a dramatic sight for visitors to see. Beyond the Arc de Triomphe down the road lies La Grande Arche de la Defense, a modern 20th century version of the Arc de Triomphe in an open cube shape 100 meters tall, a monument to humanity and humanitarian ideals rather than military victories. The Arc de Triomphe was an amazing sight, I am so glad I got to see it! This image is available in both warm monochrome and black and white.
You can read about our adventure in Europe in my husband's book, "Vagabonds in France", by Michael A. Barry. Come with us as we lose our home, put everything in storage, and navigate through Europe for a few months with no return date or home to come back to. Sail across the Atlantic, dodge pickpockets, climb mountains, descend into the Paris Metro, endure nasty weather and illness, witness the flood of the century, and meet some wonderful and not-so-wonderful people. Chuckle with us as we live among the French and try to learn their ways and language. Then make it back home to an empty house we'd never seen before. The book with its 75 illustrations is available in both paperback and Kindle on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCUNSEK .
