Description
Lush tropical growth abounds at McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach, Florida. A sign describes the history of McKee, which started with 80 acres as McKee Jungle Gardens in the 1930's. It had monkeys, and alligator, an aviary, and 300 royal palms planted in rows as "Cathedral of Palms". It was designed by the same man who designed Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami and Bok Tower in Lake Wales. It was a tourist destination until the 1970's when it could no longer compete with other amusement parks, and 62 acres were turned into a golf course and condos. The remaining 18 acres are what McKee Botanical Gardens are today. This photo is available in black and white (See "McKee Jungle Gardens, Black and White").
