Painting - Oil On Hand Stretched Round Canvas
Description
The original of this image has sold. Please note the original is round (only the blue painting area in the center of this image) and does not include the black square background. The black square background will be included in any print or other product orders. The original round canvas does not need to be framed, since the outer edges of the canvas are painted the same very dark blue color as the painting.
This is a very special painting for me, because it was the very first oil painting I ever made. And I handmade the canvas, which is round. I cut a 36 inch diameter circle frame out of wood, 7/8 of an inch thick, with a 3 inch width, and hand stretched canvas around it, to make a circular canvas. Then I primed the canvas with gesso, and drew the outline of the lighthouse, and then painted the canvas in oils. This was an imaginary scene I made up in my head. I wanted to portray a lighthouse shining its light very brightly during a stormy night for boats to see their way by the rocky coastline. It was the first time I experimented with a palette knife with oils, and I was trying to give the feeling that the rocks were wet from waves crashing onto them, and that the light of the lighthouse was reflecting onto them.
As I look back on this painting it made me realize I have always been fascinated by light and shadow, as I continue to use that in my photography. I made the canvas round for this painting because I was thinking of how the lighthouse would look from a ship's porthole but also from binoculars or a telescope. I made this while I was a student in art school in 1990, and the teacher asked us to create a shaped canvas that was not rectangular or square. I finished the painting during the summer of 1990 when I was taking private art lessons from Linda Unger, a local art teacher from PA who inspired me to take my art to another level. She also was a huge influence in how I taught my art students in the future. In the shaped canvas class I also made a trapezoid painting with palm trees.
