Description
The locks of love in Paris are seen at many of the tourist landmarks throughout the city. Couples like to have their names engraved or written on the locks, then they attach it to the railing or an object and throw the key in the Seine as a sign of their unbroken devotion to each other. This tradition started in 2008 from an inspiration from a novel and tradition that originated in Italy. Unfortunately the weight of the locks has damaged some of the landmarks. The Pont des Arts bridge in Paris had a section of the fencing collapse from the weight of the locks, and all locks and railings were removed and replaced with plexiglass to prevent future locks. Love locks have been used all around the world, and the idea is romantic, but some city officials consider it vandalism. Some artists have made "lock trees" for locks to be attached to create beautiful sculptures with meaning. The love locks can still be seen in Paris around town, but not on the Pont des Arts. This image is also available in black and white.
You can read about our adventure in Europe in my husband's book, "Vagabonds in France", by Michael A. Barry. Come with us as we lose our home, put everything in storage, and navigate through Europe for a few months with no return date or home to come back to. Sail across the Atlantic, dodge pickpockets, climb mountains, descend into the Paris Metro, endure nasty weather and illness, witness the flood of the century, and meet some wonderful and not-so-wonderful people. Chuckle with us as we live among the French and try to learn their ways and language. Then make it back home to an empty house we'd never seen before. The book with its 75 illustrations is available in both paperback and Kindle on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCUNSEK .
