Artist's Description
When I was in the Port of Nice and the light was just right, the water was a gorgeous turquoise. The bright colorful boats, wealthy yachts, and surrounding architecture with old shutters and balconies kept me coming back to the marina to see all the colors. Behind the marina is Castle Hill, a limestone rock 93 meters high overlooking the sea. In medieval times a fortress on Castle Hill protected the city. Now Castle Hill is a park that provides panoramic views of the coastline, city, and the marina below. Nice is a beautiful city on the Mediterranean Sea in the Cote d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is in the French Riviera near Monaco, Eze, and St. Paul de Vence. Nice is nicknamed, "Nice la Belle", which means "Nice the Beautiful". The beauty and mild Mediterranean climate attracted the English upper class in the late 18th century to stay here in the winter.
