Description
I traveled a long distance and made a big effort to get to this location just at blue hour when the sky still had details and the lights came on the lighthouse. It's a magical time for photography and makes incredible photos! I wanted to capture this beautiful red lighthouse in the best light possible.
I live in Florida and flew to Michigan to capture this iconic Dutch architecture in Holland, Michigan on Lake Michigan. This beautiful big red lighthouse sits on a channel that connects Lake Michigan with Lake Macatawa. "Big Red" is also known as Holland Harbor Light. The original structure was built in 1872, and the current structure was built in 1907. It has a gabled roof which reflects the Dutch influence in the area. Each spring Holland, Michigan hosts the very popular Tulip Time festival.
I only had a few days in Holland to capture this photo. The first day I went it was very overcast and big clouds brought high winds blowing sand all over my gear. It began to rain and thankfully I got back to my car in time. So I came back the next day earlier in the afternoon and scouted the best location so I was ready when the light got good. In the meantime it was so nice to watch the boats go by.
This is a popular place for boating. Many people come to Holland State Park at sunset to watch the boats. This lighthouse brings back many memories for locals.
Thankfully my second time here the sky was so beautiful! The sunset was incredible, and after the sun went down the sky went very blue and the lights of the lighthouse came on. It was my moment! This was my favorite photo of the night. This is a view of the lighthouse across the channel from Holland State Park. I captured a sailboat entering the canal to Lake Macatawa.
